The HRE Foundation Spell-a-thon is an interactive fundraiser for the students of Highland Ranch Elementary. The students get spelling lists of words they need to learn and they get sponsors to support them for the big Spell-a-thon. They can ask for sponsors, either flat donations or per word, and after they take their spelling tests in class, they go and collect all the money they raised.
All students in grades 3-5 who get 100% on their spelling tests get invited to participate in the school Spelling Bee and the winners of that go on to a city Spelling Bee.
Every student who turns in a pledge sheet gets entered into a raffle and the student who gathers and turns in the most donations by the cut off date gets to win the grand prize. There is also the “Queen Bee” (you may know her as Mrs. Venolia) who goes around and has other chances to spell words on the spot and win a prize.
Not only do kids practice their spelling and help raise money to support their school, but they get lots of opportunities to challenge themselves and win lots of prizes.
